Sodium metabisulphite how long
Use 1 teaspoon of powder per litre of cold water to make a solution. Pour some solution into fermenters, bottles etc, swirl around and leave for 15 minutes before draining out. Run solution over other items like stirring spoons, thermometers before use. Drain solution out of equipment but do not rinse or dry before using. Use immediately once sterilised. Limit exposure to rubber parts such as o-rings and bungs.
Your cart. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that bisulphite either sodium or potassium is a very poor sanitizer for beer. It can work with wine becasue the pH of wine is lower than beer and the alcohol content is higher than beer.
Those provide additional protection. But for beer, bisulphite will not as well as it does for wine. It will be ok sanitizing bottles and other small items with the g you have, but you'll need a lot more to sanitize a carboy. I would instead look to get hold of some starsan or iodophor from your LHBS, since these simply need swilling around in the vessel to be sanitized and left for a minute. They are also no rinse. I foolishly bought a BIG bag from Vigo last year. As I was using it, the remaining powder in the bag absorbed water from the surrounding and somewhat humid atmosphere. It went rock hard. I then broke it up into pieces yes, that hard! Do you think it's still as efficient to use as it was when I bought it? Or should I get new for this year's production?
Cheshire Matt. Metabisulphite does degrade over time - if you search on here you will find Andrew Lea explaining the rationale behind his dosage rates compared to what Vigo may publish.
