I don't think fictional works have the capacity to be 'scary'. Most of them build tension, create eerie atmosphere, abuse your imagination with established tropes or jump-scare. The soundtrack has this silent hill video game not movie vibe where it has this industrial sound and feel to it where it can be very anxiety inducing. The psychological elements are very brilliant and loves fucking with your head.

It doesn't use any jump scares, only psychological horror. I think there's a considerable difference between Western's horror and Eastern's horror, which would explain why I mostly find Asian horror movies scarier than Hollywood horror movies. Also, I can relate to horror anime just fine, perhaps because of me being an Asian.
