My only two complaints are a slight echo sometimes which could be the phone , and it not timestamping the caller ID info. When you come home and check the caller ID - it lists the names and numbers, but no date or time.
So you don't know if they called that day, or that is from when they called you a week ago. Not the end of the world, but still seems like a simple fix. Pros: No PC required! This little device is small, easy to install, and one device can convert all the analog phones in your home over to voip. Nettalk tech support is very friendly and responds very quickly. If you can tolerate occasional call drops then this device may work for you. Cons: I spent a lot of time researching this device and how to make it work well with my firewall.
Unfortunately this was not good enough to gain "wife acceptance". She uses the phone much more than I, and her opinion is what counts. I have since switched to a competitor and have not had a single problem. Overall Review: This device would likely work great as a second line, but I think they have some improvements to make before it could be considered as good as the competition.
There are a couple of things that I think Nettalk should be more forthcoming about: 1 Device does not ring like a normal phone. During an incoming call, the rings come in as short sporadic bursts. Dialling less than 10 digits results in a busy signal, which I found to be a bit misleading until I realised what was going on. I'm sure this won't be an issue for some, but it apparently was impossibly difficult for a certain member of my extended family.
Pros: Great low cost telephone with lots of nice features. Just setup speed dial then it is not an issue. I setup mine with ip reservation and DMZ. I get the occasional beep every once in a while. The call quality to my mom's Nettalk from mine is better than when I call her on my land line! There basically is nothing GOOD about it! I tried for 9 DAYS to get them to help. Possibly a firmware update would help, etc.
I sent numerous emails, and opened 3 separate tickets. They answered 2 of the tickets, and NONE of the follow-up emails! I tried a known good Ethernet cable, different ports on the router, different phones, and then since I was also upgrading my entire network, a new router.
Pros: I've read many reviews of the Nettalk Duo and I plan to purchace one soon, but I want everyone to know about Nettalk's "Terms of use policy" stating that you will limited to minutes of use per month. Outgoing and incoming calls will both be counted. Dou to dou calls are free, but the minutes counted fpr both partis. Cons: If you go over this limit just once, you will be put on a pay per minute plan for all calls and be billed for your usage for the remainder of your contract.
This will be done without recourse or warning. If you are a heavy user you you will have to keep track of your usage. Outgoing and incoming calls arel both be counted. Dou to dou calls are free, but the minutes are counted for both parties. Pros: - Works great, better than our previous telco, landline, as far as call quality and volume on both ends - Cheap, no monthly phone bill!
Cons: - Took some time to configure the router to get it working - No local numbers in my area - CID doesn't show up on TV screen from the satellite box as opposed to the landline.
